Laying direction parquet

The direction of installation determines the spatial effect: lengthwise to the main light creates a calmer effect, crosswise emphasizes gaps and shadows, and diagonally balances multiple light axes. Below you will find the tried-and-tested rules, examples based on room situations, and technical information – applicable to Massif- and 3-layer parquet.

Basic rules & spatial effect

Light leads: Along the main light source (window front), the floor appears calmer and more uniform; joints are visually less noticeable.

Statement across: Across the incidence of light, gaps/shadows are emphasized – deliberately used in large rooms when the floor is intended to accentuate.

Control proportions: In long/narrow rooms, longitudinal installation lengthens the space; cross installation shortens and widens the appearance. Diagonal installation is a good compromise for multiple light axes.

Application according to room situation

Corridors & passageways: Lay the flooring in the direction of travel (parallel to the long axis) – this creates a calming effect and visually stretches it. Lay the flooring across the floor only if the intention is to create a wider area.

Open-plan living areas: A consistent direction creates calm; changes in direction create zoning/threshold effects. With herringbone flooring, align the axis with the window front.

Multiple light sources: If there is no dominant light source, align with the room geometry (longest wall/path layout) – alternatively, diagonally.

Technology & Patterns: What sets the direction?

Substructure/statics: For floorboards on joists, the supporting structure often determines the direction. Plan center distances and overlaps professionally.

Click & Sample: Align the first reference wall neatly. Herringbone/French tile patterns require a clear axis (usually the window or room axis)—determine this beforehand.

Underfloor heating: The direction is secondary. More important are a homogeneous structure, low overall thickness, and adhesive installation; the light rule remains valid.
