Our cutting boards are made from teak that grows in Mexico. We thus reconcile high social and ecological standards with the practical advantages of wooden cutting boards and the exclusive tropical wood aesthetic.
The eco wooden chopping board
The sustainable teak reforestation from which the wood for our chopping boards originates is located in the northwest of Mexico. The FSC-certified forest area stores the CO2 emissions of over 20,000 cars and, thanks to ongoing reforestation, the contribution to climate change is increasing every day. The employees in the factory receive a wage well above the fair trade standard and free healthcare.
The chopping boards are also particularly sustainable because they use the wood from the tree trunk, which cannot be used for decking due to its shortness. This ensures that resources are used optimally and not wasted.
Wood or plastic or stone?
Compared to plastic or stone chopping boards, teak chopping boards are particularly suitable for use in the kitchen for various reasons: wood is particularly gentle on knife blades and dulls them more slowly than other materials. Wood is naturally antiseptic and therefore particularly hygienic. And finally, teak is particularly suitable for use in the kitchen due to its extremely high durability and dimensional stability. It’s not for nothing that Cook’s Illustrated magazine said of our cutting boards: “The last cutting board you’ll ever need”.
At Betterwood, we divide our chopping boards into the following categories “kitchen board” and “chopping block” . Kitchen boards are made of wood that has been cut parallel to the tree fiber. They are thinner and usually easier to handle than chopping blocks. We recommend it as a breakfast board or for cutting bread. Chopping blocks are made from wood that has been cut across the grain of the tree. Due to its density, the so-called face wood is perfectly suited to withstand the high strain of daily cutting work in the kitchen – it does not fray.
