Wood is like people: The gray comes with age. Decking garden furniture and wooden tiles in outdoor areas lose their natural wood color due to sun and rain. Unoiled teak becomes silver, Bangkirai asphalt gray – not much is left of golden brown or wine red. From a technical point of view, this is initially unproblematic and you could simply let the wood be wood.
However, mosses, algae and fungi can also infest the wood, causing unsightly spots and stains – and in the worst case even impairing the durability of the decking. In this case, comprehensive wood care not only has a cosmetic effect, but also extends the service life of decking boards and wooden furniture.
Spring cleaning for the wooden terrace
Spring is the best time to refresh old, grayed wooden decking. When the wooden decking is completely dry for the first time and there is no rain in sight for the next 24 hours, the wood care can begin.
BioMaderas has developed a complete wood care for decking wood and outdoor wood to clean, de-grey and protect old wood:
This is how old, gray wooden decks are refreshed:
- Clean your patio with BioMaderas patio cleanerThe terrace cleaner made from oxalic acid cleans the wood of dirt and stains. The powder is stirred into lukewarm water in a ratio of 1 to 15 and then applied to the terrace with a watering can or similar. After 15 minutes, the decking boards are also scrubbed. The cleaner dissolves the dirt, which then only needs to be rinsed off with plenty of water. Incidentally, the dissolved patio cleaner is harmless to plants.
- Refresh wood color with BioMaderas decking oil The terrace is now clean and protected, but has still not regained its wood color. A decking oil is used for this. We recommend BioMaderas decking oil light, as the light pigmentation improves the color retention and does not cover the wood structure. The oil is applied to the dry and cleaned wooden decking with a lint-free cotton cloth. Care should be taken to ensure that the oil is rubbed in well in a thin layer and that no puddles of oil form.
Protecting new wooden decking
Of course, freshly laid wooden decking can also be protected and maintained. The decking cleaner is not necessary for freshly laid decking boards. However, the cut edges of hardwoods should be treated with
BioMaderas wood protection impregnation can then be used as a preventative measure against algae and moss. And if you want to protect the color of your wooden decking from graying for longer, you should treat the decking boards with colorless decking oil after installation.
Maintaining a wooden decking is time-consuming – and it will never be possible to stop it graying completely. But the terrace will thank you for it: with a longer service life and beauty in old age.
