The Brazilian environmental authority IBAMA has set up a force that is probably unique in the world: scientists are trained in hand-to-hand combat and equipped with weapons to take action against illegal mines and deforestation in the tropical rainforest. The Arte report “Scientists under arms” now accompanies the men during their training and in action.
Unfortunately, the video is no longer available online.
The reportage makes it clear that the destruction of the rainforest can only be stopped in the long term if the rural population is offered alternative sources of income that are in harmony with environmental protection. Responsible and limited forest use in accordance with strict ecological guidelines can be an option here.
