Ibama arms scientists

Armed scientists against illegal mines

The Brazilian Environment Agency IBAMA created a troop that is probably unique in the world: Scientists are trained in close combat and equipped with weapons to take action against illegal mines and deforestation in the tropical rainforest. The Arte report “Scientists under Arms” now accompanies the men during their training and in action.

The report makes it clear that the destruction of the rainforest can only be stopped in the long term if the rural population is offered alternative sources of income that are in line with environmental protection. Responsible and limited forest use according to strict ecological guidelines can be an option here.
