Garden shed terrace

The garden shed to the wooden terrace

A garden house with a wooden terrace allows you to enjoy a little vacation at any time. But before the pleasure comes the planning – and this should be done meticulously. Because whether it’s a garden shed or a large-scale project, planning mistakes can be expensive.

A garden shed with wooden decking should be carefully planned. A true-to-scale drawing can protect against construction errors later on. The size of the patio adjacent to the garden shed is important. For four people and a barbecue, you should reckon with 20 square meters. If you also want to use the terrace as a dance floor, you will of course need a few more square meters.

A patio on a garden shed does not necessarily have to be rectangular. With a little skill, even curves are possible. To do this, the space around the garden shed should be measured precisely.

The patio roof should also be considered at the planning stage. If you don’t want to bask in the sun in summer, a patio cover provides the necessary protection on the patio. And the garden shed is also protected from intense sunlight.

Place in the sun

When aligning the patio, the position of the sun should be taken into account. After all, nobody wants to sit in the shade in summer. The most hours of sunshine can be achieved with a south-facing orientation.

Trees should not stand directly above the terrace. These ensure more moisture and thus the formation of moisture on the wood, which promotes the formation of algae and mold, especially in less resistant woods such as Douglas fir or Siberian larch.

Don’t forget electricity and water

When planning, electricity and water should be connected directly to the wooden terrace and garden shed. It is advisable to plan a little more generously, as cables can only be installed afterwards at a higher cost. The wooden terrace should also be equipped with sufficient sockets. Electricity is not only needed for outdoor lighting. The stereo system or electric grill also need electricity. A water connection in a suitable place also increases comfort.

The right foundation

The foundation is the basis of the wooden decking. If the garden shed and wooden deck are planned together, the foundation can be laid for both projects at the same time. Various foundation forms are available. The type of foundation is determined by the existing subsoil and the garden shed and patio built on it. The foundation should be laid with great care to avoid structural damage later on.

The substructure

Robust woods with a very long service life should be chosen for the substructure. Tropical hardwoods such as cumaru are particularly suitable. The patio roofing can be taken into account at the same time. Longitudinal beams and cross beams are required. The beams are connected with stainless steel screws and brackets. A slope of approx. 1 to 2 percent should be allowed for during assembly so that no waterlogging occurs and water can run off the wooden decking when it rains.

High-quality planking

The cladding of the wooden decking on the garden shed has to withstand a lot. We’re not just talking about UV radiation and moisture, but also the mechanical stress caused by walking on the decking. Also for the decking boards should also be made of robust wood with a long service life.

Protection from the weather and mold and mildew is provided by open glazes and wood oils . They are the optimum protection for the wood. To ensure that the garden shed and wooden decking harmonize with each other, it is advisable to choose the same color. However, interesting contrasts are also possible.
