The substructure is in place. Now you come to the visible part of your wooden decking: the decking boards. Here you can find out how to cut and install the decking boards.
Before laying, note that the decking boards have a top and underside. The top side is characterized by the fact that it has as few blemishes as possible. However, both sides can often be used as the top. If you do not wish to use either side, please contact us before processing the plank.
The decking boards are laid at right angles to the substructure. Start at the edge of the deck by screwing the first board to the substructure. If you are laying the boards parallel to the house wall, start at the house wall. Ensure that the decking boards are at least 15-20 mm away from solid structures (house walls, closed railings or terrace edgings) to ensure that the terrace is ventilated from below. Otherwise, waterlogging can easily occur, which reduces the service life of the decking and increases the risk of warping.
The planks have catalog dimensions. This means that planks can be a few centimeters longer than specified. This allows you to cut fresh front edges without losing length. End cracks can be removed by cutting. In the case of a continuous installation (without bonding), however, it is also possible to lay the boards as supplied and to make a guided end cut at the end of the terrace and align any protruding board ends. When laying in a bond, it is necessary to cut the boards to size on both sides, as the boards do not necessarily have a right-angled end cut.
Saw blade advice
Fresh cut edges resulting from cutting should be waxed with BioMadera’s end edge wax to reduce the risk of end cracks.
The best way to achieve a flush finish to the decking is to make a guided end cut after installing the boards. Use a guide rail and hand-held circular saw for this. You can also use a plunge saw or shadow gap cutter to make a finishing cut on solid structures.
The decking boards should be laid with an expansion joint of 5mm to 8mm – depending on the width of the board and the ventilation of the terrace. A joint of 5mm is sufficient for decking boards with a width between 50mm and 90mm. Decking boards with a width of 120mm should be laid with a 6mm joint, decking boards with a width of 145mm should be laid with an 8mm joint. Use appropriate spacers during installation to achieve a uniform joint pattern. Depending on the type of wood, the joint at the ends of the planks should be at least 1 mm.
