Steel beam balconies

CONSULTING ” DECKING BOARDS ” roof or balcony

Wooden terrace on roof or balcony

The foundation of a balcony or roof terrace can be of two types: Either as a steel girder construction or as a closed surface, sometimes sealed by a roof membrane or tar membrane. In both cases, you need to keep an eye on the railing height and often only have a limited installation height available. At this point, we clarify the correct preparatory work for both variants.

Construction of a wooden deck on roof foil

Terrace pads

As a support for the substructure or pedestal bearing and as protection for the roof membrane and tar membrane.

Root fleece

To ensure that the film and tar membrane are protected and do not react with the decking pads.

Roofing membrane or tar membrane

The distance between the beams defines the construction method of the substructure.

So that your wooden decking does not rattle later.

Terrace on EPDM foil or tarred membrane

When building a wooden deck on an EPDM membrane (also known as a roofing membrane) or welded tar membranes, you must pay particular attention to the protection of the respective waterproofing. In the case of EPDM membranes, we recommend laying root fleece over the entire surface first. Even if weed growth is not usually a problem on roof terraces and balconies, the fleece fulfills the important function of preventing a chemical reaction between the foil and the terrace pad.

The challenge of height compensation

Even if the height compensation is lower when laying on a roof or balcony than when laying on a slope or on the ground, the surfaces are generally not 100% level. Here too, leveling must therefore be carried out using several terrace pads or pedestals, which must also keep the railing height in mind and only have a limited installation height available.

Terrace on steel girders

The advantage of steel girders is that everything should already be “in the water”, so no leveling of the surface is necessary. To ensure that steel and wood or steel and aluminum do not cause any noise later on, the joists should be covered with decking pads at certain points or with a rubber granulate roll along their entire length.

The span challenge

In many balconies and roofs, the steel beams were welded at intervals that did not match the desired installation direction of the decking boards. Only with a relatively narrow grid of 50 cm or less can the structural timbers run parallel to the steel girders. For larger distances, the structural timbers must run at right angles to the beams. If you then want to change the laying direction of the decking boards, counter-battening is necessary, but care must be taken to ensure that the railing does not become too low later on.
