Visible fastening of the decking boards with decking screws is the classic and tried-and-tested method for fastening the boards to the substructure. Here you should work cleanly and countersink the decking screws evenly and screw them in alignment to create a harmonious overall appearance.
Use stainless steel BioMaderas decking screws for a long service life of your wooden decking. Use a stainless steel bit to prevent oxidation points on the floorboards. If you are working with base metals, carefully sweep your wooden decking after installation to avoid oxidation points.
The decking boards with a width of between 75 mm and 145 mm are screwed to the substructure below with two screws each. For narrower boards, it is sufficient to use only one decking screw per intersection of decking board / substructure. The position of the screw should be 1.5 cm to 2.5 cm away from the edge of the plank. At the joint (where two plank ends meet), the screws should be 2.5 cm to 8 cm from the edge.
Pre-drill the holes before screwing (for BioMaderas decking screws with a drill diameter of 4.5 mm), as all our decking boards are made of very resistant and hard wood. Pre-drilling reduces the risk of splintering and tearing screws. Mill the drill holes with a countersink so that the screw heads can be countersunk flush into the wood.
Use a cordless screwdriver, not a drill, to screw in the screws. The screws can easily be damaged when screwing them in. This damage may not show immediately, but can lead to screw heads breaking off after some time. Great care must therefore be taken during this step.
Cordless screwdrivers usually have a differential to prevent the screws from being overtightened. However, the differential emits a shock on the screw head when it is released. This is why professionals often work without a differential. This means that there is still a risk of overtightening if you are careless, but you gain more control over the force when screwing in.
If you want to try screwing without differential, you should set the cordless screwdriver to drilling force and to the lowest gear – often referred to as 1 of 2. Use these settings to start screwing in the screw. Make sure that the speed is reduced towards the end of the screwing process until the screw is firmly seated in the wood. After a few screwing operations, you will quickly develop a feel for screwing in and increase the service life and durability of your decking in this way.
