Wooden decking on stone or concrete

A wooden deck can usually be built on top of an existing stone deck without much effort. The prerequisite for this is that individual areas are not sunk. Slight unevenness, on the other hand, is unproblematic in many cases and can be evened out.

Root fleece

If weeds grow between the stone tiles, you should lay fleece. This is of course not necessary with a closed concrete surface.

This is the existing floor. The water should already be draining well here. Unevenness can be evened out using decking pads or pedestals.

Subsoil solid but water-permeable

If plants grow through the joints between the stones, we recommend laying root fleece over the entire surface. A weed fleece is of course not necessary on a closed concrete surface.

The next step is to lay rubber granulate decking pads between the substructure beams and the stone or concrete floor. Decking pads fulfill two important functions:

  1. They ensure that the substructure does not form a water barrier along its length. Patio pads are placed under the substructure approximately every 50 cm, creating a gap between the floor and the substructure and allowing rainwater to flow through.
  2. Patio pads prevent rattling noises when the patio is walked on later. Due to the swelling and shrinking behavior of the wood, there is a slight distortion in the millimeter range over the course of the seasons. This is completely unproblematic, but can lead to annoying rattling if you don’t take precautions with shock absorbers in the form of rubber granulate.

Pedestal bearings for a higher structure and height compensation

If a higher installation height is required, height-adjustable terrace pedestals can be placed on the existing stone terrace as supports. The points for this depend on the span of the respective substructure. With this variant, there is no need for decking pads.

The substructure is aligned straight using a spirit level and alignment board. Unevenness can be compensated for with additional decking pads, offcuts or by adjusting the decking feet.
