Maintaining a wooden terrace

CONSULTING ” DECKING BOARDS ” care

Maintaining and oiling wooden decking

Wood is like people: The gray comes with age. Outdoor decking boards lose their natural wood color due to sun and rain and acquire a silver-grey patina. Surface cracks also occur over the years. This process can be slowed down by oiling, but not stopped completely.

How does my wooden decking age?

The wood color changes with weathering. Jatoba and Garapa initially become much darker in sunlight before graying sets in, whereas teak quickly turns silver. You should therefore not base your choice of wood type on color alone, but always keep an eye on the aging process.

Cracks on the decking boards

Cracks also occur on the surface or at the ends of decking boards. Although this effect is more pronounced in native woods, it also occurs regularly in tropical woods.

The right care products

From a technical point of view, the graying of the decking and the formation of cracks is not really a problem: it does not reduce the durability of the wood. However, unsightly spots and stains can form, which can be easily removed with the right care. Cleaning and impregnation can also extend the natural life of the decking boards. The right care for your wooden decking depends above all on what the aim of the care is. Here you will find an overview of suitable products for patio care.

Terrace oil from BioMaderas

Application: Once for initial protection or twice a year for longer color retention. BioMaderas decking oil has been specially developed for tropical wood decking boards. One liter is sufficient for about 10 square meters of terrace. The oil is available in three variants:

Colorless: For effective protection against cracks.

Light: For protection against cracking and longer color retention.

Dark: For already greyed surfaces that are to be given a new color

Impregnation from BioMaderas

Effect: Prevents fungal and mold infestation.

Application: Only on less durable wood or in poorly ventilated areas. The impregnation protects the wood from fungal attack. However, as it is toxic and BioMaderas decking wood is naturally highly resistant to wood-destroying fungi, we only recommend using it in poorly ventilated and damp areas of the decking or on less durable woods such as larch or spruce.

Front edge wax from BioMaderas

Effect: Protection against end cracks.

Application: The end edge wax significantly reduces the formation of end cracks on the cut edges and should be applied once to the end wood after the boards have been cut to size.

How do I oil my wooden decking?

To reduce cracking, the decking should be oiled after installation. If you want to keep the wood color longer, you should repeat the application twice a year with the light-colored decking oil from BioMaderas.

Preparation: When the decking is finished, it can be oiled. The wooden substrate must be clean, free of dust and grease and dry. Remove soiling with a suitable cleaner. Stir well before and during use.

Application: Apply BioMaderas Decking Oil thinly and evenly to bare, untreated wood with a lint-free cotton cloth, brush or roller.

Touch up: Remove any excess (oil not absorbed into the wood) within 20 minutes with a cloth or rub in.

Leave to rest: The freshly oiled surface should not get wet for 8 hours. The wood is then weatherproof.
