When comparing the durability of different types of garden furniture, the material used plays a particularly important role. Naturally, garden furniture made with industrial materials such as stainless steel and aluminum is the most durable. However, the long durability also comes at a corresponding price. Disposal is also difficult.
If you compare garden furniture made of good hardwood with plastic furniture, the difference in durability outdoors is actually not that great. For example, if you have opted for furniture made of genuine teak for example, it can last well over 25 years outdoors with little maintenance. Teak (Tectona Grandis) has resistance class (or durability class) 1 and therefore has a high natural resistance to external influences such as fungi and insects. It can therefore easily keep up with most plastic garden furniture. Teak also ages “gracefully” and acquires a natural patina over the years, allowing it to blend harmoniously into your garden environment.
With plastics plastics may become brittle and fade. This means that you may not necessarily enjoy your garden furniture for long, even if it is durable. Outdoor furniture made from real acacia can last just as long as teak. However, due to the low occurrence of acacia trees, there is only a limited range of garden furniture made from this hardwood. robinia and eucalyptus, which also belong to the common woods in the manufacture of wooden garden furniture, are also highly durable outdoors, but cannot compete with acacia or teak.
