Offcuts for parquet
When parquet is laid, there is always waste. But how can the correct quantity be calculated before ordering? How much waste should be planned in addition to the surface area?
Formula for calculating the waste
A rule of thumb for calculating the material requirements for parquet is as follows:
- Square meter area + 5% waste = material requirement
This applies to simple, rectangular rooms. If the room is angled, has a bay window, a staircase or similar, you should reckon with 8% to 10% waste. If the parquet is sold in packages, the material requirement including offcuts must be rounded up to the next package unit.
Convert square meters to linear meters
If parquet is not offered in square meters but in running meters, the running meters must be converted into square meters in order to determine the correct material requirement.

| 120mm wide parquet planks | 8,4 | x square meter of wooden floor = material requirement in running meters |
| 145mm wide parquet planks | 6,9 | x square meter of wooden floor = material requirement in running meters |
Depending on the floor plan, 5% to 10% waste should be added to the required running meters.
How can the material requirements for skirting boards be calculated?
To calculate the amount of skirting board material required, you need to add up the side edges of your floor plan. This number of meters is rounded up to whole rods of skirting boards. The waste is very low here.
