CONSULTING ” PARQUET ” laying direction

Laying direction parquet

The laying direction determines the spatial effect: lengthwise to the main light has a calmer effect, crosswise emphasizes joints and shadows, diagonal balances out several light axes. Below you will find the tried and tested rules, examples according to the room situation and technical information – transferable to solid– and 3-layer parquet.

Basic rules & spatial effect

light: Along the main light source (window front), the floor appears calmer and more uniform; joints recede visually.

Statement across: Joints/shadows are reinforced across the incidence of light – can be used deliberately in large rooms if the floor is intended to accentuate.

Control proportions: In long/narrow rooms, longitudinal installation lengthens; transverse installation “shortens” and visually widens. Diagonal is a good compromise with several light axes.

Application according to room situation

Corridors & passageways: Lay in the direction of travel (parallel to the longitudinal axis) – this calms and visually stretches. Crosswise only if you want to deliberately widen them.

Open living areas: One continuous direction creates calm; changing direction creates zoning/threshold effects. With herringbone, align the axis to the window front.

Multiple light sources: If there is no dominant incidence of light, use the room geometry as a guide (longest wall/route) – alternatively diagonally.

Technique & Sample: What sets the direction?

Substructure/statics: In the case of planks on wooden supports, the supporting structure often determines the direction. Plan center distances/overlaps correctly.

Click & Sample: Cleanly align the first cover wall. Herringbone/French require a clear axis (usually window or room axis) – define in advance.

Underfloor heating: The direction is secondary. Homogeneous structure, low overall thickness and adhesive installation are more important; the light rule remains valid.
