Parquet laying pattern

In addition to the choice of wood species, the choice of the right laying pattern is probably the most important factor when laying your parquet. Each laying pattern has a different effect and can give the room a completely different character.

Wild association, simple and authentic

The wild bond is the laying pattern that is sometimes the easiest to lay. Especially for short planks or parquet that is supplied in falling lengths, i.e. with planks of different lengths, the wild bond is very suitable. Here, the planks are simply laid in parallel rows, with no attention paid to regularity at the joints. This makes laying very easy, as the planks only need to be adjusted at the end of the rows. Probably the best-known representative of this type of installation is the classic ship’s floorwhich is laid using strip parquet.

Contrary to what the name suggests, the wild bond ensures that the parquet flooring ends up being unique and authentic. This allows you to make the room truly unique. For more regularity, you can also lay the planks in an English bond , with the joints always on half of the plank above.

Herringbone pattern

Herringbone pattern, always a new trend

The herringbone pattern has a long tradition in the laying of parquet flooring and can be found in many historic buildings. Nevertheless, it is not old-fashioned and is always in vogue. The laying pattern consisting of diagonally arranged planks is usually only laid with strip parquet planks, as these have the corresponding filigree format required for this.

The planks can either meet at the corners, adjusted to 45 degrees, or the end faces can be placed uncut against the adjacent plank (as shown in the picture). In addition to the single herringbone Sample, there are also double or triple herringbone Samples. It is important with all variants that you pay attention to the differently manufactured rods for this Sample if necessary (left and right rods).

Even though this type of installation is relatively complex and expensive, it is still popular and works best in large rooms.

Cube structure, striking and yet harmonious

In the checkerboard pattern (formerly also panel pattern), individual parquet strips are combined in squares, which alternate in the laying direction. Since the resulting Sample is reminiscent of a chessboard, it is also called chessboard pattern. Similar to the herringbone Sample, this laying Sample is also an eye-catcher and relatively conspicuous. Nevertheless, it can have a harmonious effect in both smaller and larger rooms.

The cube bond can only be laid with rigid parquet and here, too, the installation is relatively complex compared to the wild or English bond, for example. However, the advantage of alternating the laying direction of the individual bars is that you don’t have to worry about the laying direction.

Traditional laying patterns, elaborate and rare

Depending on the skill of the person laying the flooring, there are no limits to the look of the laying pattern. Parquet floors with complex laying patterns can be found in historic buildings and castles in particular. The simpler traditional patterns in this respect include, for example, the ladder association or the old German association. On the other hand, elaborate mosaic patterns require a great deal of skill, with each plank having to be individually adapted.

Due to the high installation effort of many classic laying Samples, these are rarely found nowadays. Nevertheless, even today a well-trained parquet layer is able to lay complicated Samples. However, keep in mind that this elaborate installation has its price.
