Oil & wax parquet

Oiled and waxed solid wood parquet has a natural look, is easy to repair and allows wood to breathe. Here you can find out when parquet oilwax or hard wax oil is useful, how to properly prepare parquet for oiling or waxing and how the ongoing maintenance of oiled floors works. Open-pored systems are a very good choice for sustainable tropical woods (e.g. teak).

Why oil or wax parquet?

Oil penetrates the wood, hardens in the pore structure and emphasizes the grain and color tone – the surface remains open-pored and diffusible. Wax also forms a thin, protective layer with a silky sheen. Both variants can be partially touched up (locally rework stains/wear) and are ideal for high-quality, sustainable woods.

  • Natural look & feel: warm, matt to silky matt, not “plasticy”.
  • Easy to repair: selective refreshing instead of complete sanding.
  • Slip sensation & indoor climate: open-pored, pleasant walking surface.

Tip: In the kitchen/hallway/entrance to the house, use oil-based systems with regular maintenance; in the bathroom (teak etc.), ensure careful edge sealing and ventilation.

Oil vs. wax vs. hard wax oil

Parquet oil (natural oil/hard oil): penetrates and hardens in the fiber. Very natural look; ideal if oiled parquet requires care and occasional re-oiling.

Wax: forms an additional, thin protective layer with a silky sheen. Good dirt repellency, regular aftercare is advisable.

Hard wax oilOil + wax in one system – emphasizes the grain and provides a slightly more robust surface. Popular in heavily used areas.

  • Choice according to use: living area = oil/hard wax oil; entrances/corridors = hard wax oil; representative zones = oil (most natural look).
  • Care: Maintenance oil/oil soap for oiled floors, wax care for waxed surfaces.

Preparation, application & care

Preparation: Thoroughly clean the surface, fine sanding/dust removal if necessary (dust-free). Room climate ~20-22 °C, 40-60 % r. h. Masking/protection of edges.

Oiling/waxing: Apply thinly and evenly (pad/roller/spatula for each system). Carefully remove excess after reaction time, do not leave “wet on wet”. Observe the manufacturer’s instructions on the number of coats/drying.

Drying & curing: Avoid draughts, ventilate evenly. Do not place full weight on the floor until it has fully cured; do not lay carpets until later.

Care of oiled floors: Clean gently (oil soap), re-oil partially if necessary. For waxed surfaces: use suitable wax care/polish.
