Frequently asked questions about parquet maintenance & renovation (FAQ)

Sanding solid teak parquet is an effective way to remove scratches, dents and discoloration and give the floor a like-new appearance. Due to the hardness of teak and to achieve a perfect result, professional equipment is required. The process takes place in several steps:

1. coarse sanding: Removes the old surface treatment and coarse unevenness.
2. intermediate sanding: Refines the surface with a medium grain.
3. fine sanding: Ensures a perfectly smooth surface in preparation for the new treatment.

The edges and corners must then be sanded with a special edge sanding machine. After thorough cleaning, the floor is ready for a new surface treatment with oil and wax.

Instructions for sanding parquet

After sanding, the surface of the wood is open-pored and must be protected. Oiling and waxing emphasizes the natural grain and protects the wood from the inside out.

1. oiling: Apply a high-quality parquet oil (hard oil) thinly and evenly with a roller or brush. Allow the oil to be absorbed according to the manufacturer’s instructions and then completely remove any excess oil that has not been absorbed with a lint-free cloth.
2. allow to dry: The oil needs time to harden. Observe the drying times before walking on the floor again or placing furniture on it.
3. waxing (optional): For additional protection and a silky matt sheen, a thin layer of hard wax can be applied and polished in after the oil has completely dried. This increases the durability of the surface.

Instructions for oiling & waxing

Proper cleaning is crucial for the longevity of an oiled teak floor.

Daily cleaning: loose dirt and dust should be removed dry with a broom, mop or vacuum cleaner with a parquet brush.

Regular damp cleaning: If the floor is very dirty, wipe it with a damp cloth. This means that the wiping cloth must be wrung out thoroughly so that no puddles of water remain on the wood. Use a moisturizing wood floor soap in the mopping water. This not only cleans, but also cares for the oiled surface with every application and maintains its protective function.
