The best wooden tiles

Wood is a natural product. Unlike industrially manufactured goods, the pattern of wooden tiles differs slightly from one tile to the next. Thanks to international quality standards and DIN norms, wood tiles from different suppliers and origins can still be compared. When choosing the best wooden tiles for your garden, balcony or terrace, you should pay particular attention to the following information:

Wood quality: Premium or FAS.

FAS is the international standard for the best sorting. Premium has established itself as the term for the best grading in the German timber trade. The wood quality indicates how low the proportion of quality-reducing features in the product is. Cracks and knotholes may only occur to a very small extent on the A-side of the decking boards with the best grading. Make sure you get binding information from your timber dealer.

Durability: Resistance class 1.

Tropical wood species generally have a longer durability outdoors, as they have better resistance to wood-destroying fungi. For particularly long-lasting wooden tiles, the wood should achieve at least resistance class 2. The wooden tiles from Betterwood achieve the highest resistance class according to the DIN standard. The location of the wooden tiles on the garden, balcony and terrace is also decisive for their subsequent durability. In a sunny and well-ventilated environment, the durability of the wood can be well over 25 years.

Drying: KD or technically dried.

Drying has a decisive influence on the dimensional stability and accuracy of the wood. Technical kiln drying (KD) is a better way of preventing subsequent warping than with exclusively air-dried wood. The wood tiles at Betterwood are technically dried.

Origin: FSC® 100%.

With tropical wood in particular, care should be taken to ensure that its origin is as sustainable and socially acceptable as possible. The strictest international standard for wood from sustainable and fair production is the FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council) certificate. Here, independent checks are carried out regularly to verify environmental and social compatibility. The wood tiles at Betterwood are FSC®-certified. Visit our forests and plantations to find out more about the origin of our wood.

Conclusion

You should base your purchase decision on these objective criteria. Ultimately, however, it is of course crucial that you like the look of the wood and that you are satisfied with the advice you receive from your timber dealer.
