The Peruvian origin

Our Cumaru decking boards and Cumaru substructure come from sustainable and FSC®-certified forestry in Peru . Through our Latin American subsidiary, we personally monitor the quality and independent experts check that no pesticides are used, that biodiversity is preserved, that only as much wood is harvested as will grow back in the same period, that employees receive fair wages and that transportation is climate-neutral.

Origin Peru Cumaru

The hardest type of wood

Cumaru is one of the world’s most durable woods. The high density results in pronounced interlocked grain. With interlocked grain, some wood fibers grow in the opposite direction to the main grain direction. These are not fully processed by the planer and can form rough spots on the plank. After the wood has been wet for the first time, the rough spots can be sanded off easily. In South America, Cumaru has been used for bridge construction for decades due to its excellent resistance and load-bearing capacity. Cumaru is also becoming increasingly popular in Europe. With their red-brown pattern, Cumaru decking boards have a unique tropical wood aesthetic. At Betterwood you will find the best quality Cumaru decking boards in 90mm, 120mm and 145mm width. We also offer matching Cumaru substructure to match.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Cumaru wood comes from South America and is one of the hardest and most durable hardwoods in the world. It is particularly popular for Cumaru decking boards due to its high density, strength and natural resistance. The wood impresses with its warm, reddish-brown coloring and excellent resistance to weathering, fungi and pests.

A special decking oil for hardwood is recommended for the care of Cumaru decking boards. Ideally, it should be pigmented to preserve the natural color of Cumaru and delay the formation of a silver-grey patina. It is important that the oil penetrates deep into the dense wood and protects against UV radiation and moisture.

Cumaru decking boards have a very long service life. With proper installation and regular maintenance, they can last 30 to 40 years or even longer. Due to its high natural resistance class, Cumaru is significantly more durable than many other types of wood.

Cumaru decking boards are characterized by an exceptionally high density of around 1,050 kg/m³. This makes them extremely resistant to mechanical stress and environmental influences. At the same time, the density ensures the high hardness and stability that makes Cumaru so popular for decking worldwide.

Both Cumaru and Ipe are among the best hardwoods for decking. Cumaru decking boards are generally slightly cheaper than Ipe, yet offer comparable hardness, density and durability. Visually, Cumaru is distinguished by its warm reddish-brown tones, while Ipe tends to be dark brown to olive in color. In terms of durability and resistance, both woods are at the highest level – Cumaru is therefore an excellent alternative to Ipe.
