Reforestation in the Atlantic rainforest

The Atlantic Rainforest, one of the most biodiverse and threatened biomes in the world, is experiencing an inspiring turnaround. Through dedicated environmental education programs, forward-thinking public policy and the production of native tree seedlings, great things have been achieved in the last two decades.

The goal: revitalization through restoration

The Copaiba project focuses on restoring and preserving precious biodiversity. Through targeted measures, the project concentrates on the regeneration of water catchment areas, the propagation of endangered plant species and the sequestration of carbon. But that’s not all: Copaiba also focuses on environmental education, community development and the promotion of environmental policy measures.

This pioneering project has received great recognition for its tireless efforts to preserve the Atlantic Rainforest and its unique diversity.

Over 3.5 million native seedlings have been produced, more than 600 hectares of forest have been restored and over 320 landowners have been mobilized. This community, united by the mission to preserve and restore the Atlantic Rainforest, is an impressive demonstration of how sustainable initiatives can achieve great things.

The place: Atlantic region in Brazil

The project covers the Peixe and Camanducaia watersheds in the Atlantic Rainforest, one of the most threatened biomes in the world. Due to human settlement and past agricultural activities, especially coffee cultivation, many areas are severely degraded. Despite these challenges, the region is still home to a rich biodiversity that urgently needs to be protected. Although secondary forests have formed after decades of natural regeneration, they lack the original diversity of species. Nevertheless, these forests serve as valuable resources for seeds and fruits that can contribute to the restoration of the regional vegetation.

Our partner: Copaiba

Copaíba was founded in 1999 by a group of friends who recognized the threat to the Atlantic Rainforest in Socorro and dedicated themselves to restoring the riparian forests. The NGO grew through new volunteers and organizations and developed comprehensive environmental projects, from the restoration of degraded areas to the production of native seedlings. Copaíba conducts environmental education programs for students and landowners and is supported by donations from individuals and businesses.
