shrinkage

Reduction of the dimensions and thus also the volume of wood as a result of a decrease in moisture. Shrinkage, like the reverse process, swelling, is only possible below fiber saturation. The changes in dimensions in the direction of the growth zones (= tangential) are always greater than in the direction of the wood rays (= radial).
