growth rings

The ring-shaped grain of the wood of a perennial plant, in particular a tree, visible in cross-section, is called an annual ring or annual ring, formerly also a wood ring. Annual rings only form where the climatic conditions cause a temporary rest in the division activity of the plant. This can be caused by winter in the seasonal climate or dry seasons in the subtropical and tropical regions, which can also occur every six months.
