The increase in the three dimensions and thus also in volume due to moisture absorption. Swelling is only possible below fiber saturation, i.e. below about 28 to 36% wood moisture. Correspondingly, when the moisture decreases, the wood shrinks. Swelling and shrinkage are repeated each time there is renewed wetting or drying (see: stamina).
