Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

We advise against this. Cooking oils such as sunflower oil or olive oil are not hardening. This means that although they are absorbed into the wood, they do not cross-link to form a solid, protective layer. Instead, they can become rancid over time, develop an unpleasant odor and form a sticky surface that attracts dirt. Instead, use suitable wood oils such as linseed oil varnish, hard wax oil or special teak oils. These harden and create a resistant and long-lasting protective layer.

Some types of wood are naturally extremely weather-resistant and water-repellent. First and foremost here is teak. Due to its high proportion of natural oils and its dense structure, it is excellently protected against moisture. Other woods with similar properties include Garapa or Cumaru. These are therefore particularly suitable for use outdoors or in damp rooms such as the bathroom.

For a long-lasting wooden fence, you should use weather-resistant types of wood. Woods with a high durability class are particularly suitable. These include teak, oak, robinia and Siberian larch or Douglas fir. These species are naturally resistant to moisture, fungal attack and pests, ensuring a long service life for your fence.

Oiling wooden boards has several important functions:

  • Protection: The oil penetrates deep into the pores and protects the wood from the inside against moisture and dirt.
  • Care: It keeps the wood supple and prevents it from drying out, becoming brittle or cracking.
  • Appearance: Oil “fires up” the natural grain of the wood, intensifies the color and gives the surface a noble, matt to silk-matt appearance.
  • Durability: A regularly oiled surface is more resistant and considerably extends the service life of the wooden board.

1. preparation: The wooden surface must be clean, dry and dust-free. If necessary, you can lightly sand the board with fine sandpaper (180-240 grit) to open up the pores.
2. apply oil: Put some oil on a lint-free cotton cloth and apply it thinly and evenly in the direction of the fibers.
3. allow to take effect: Leave the oil on for approx. 15-20 minutes, depending on the manufacturer’s instructions, so that it can penetrate deep into the wood.
4. remove excess: Completely remove the excess oil that has not been absorbed with a clean, dry cloth. No sticky layer should remain.
5. allow to dry: Allow the board to dry thoroughly. For optimum protection, the process can be repeated after 24 hours.
Important note: Cloths soaked with oil can ignite spontaneously! Soak the cloths in water after use or spread them out in the open air to dry.

For outdoor use, you should only choose wood species with high natural durability and weather resistance. The “premier class” for outdoor use is teakas it is extremely dimensionally stable and resistant to moisture and pests. Other very suitable hardwoods are cumaruGarapa and Robinia. Domestic woods such as larch and Douglas fir are also a popular choice for outdoor use.
