Animal welfare in FSC-certified forests
In this video we present a groundbreaking study conducted by Utrecht University with the support of WWF and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). Published on April 10, 2024 in the prestigious journal Nature, the research highlights the effectiveness of measures in FSC-certified forest concessions to protect wildlife.

FSC certification protects wildlife in tropical rainforests
Yuri Wertz, a biologist at Utrecht University, conducted a large-scale study in Central Africa with WWF. It shows for the first time that FSC-certified forestry sustainably protects wildlife.
How the study works
Over 14 million photos were analyzed using camera traps in 1,3 forest concessions (FSC-certified and non-certified) in Congo and Gabon. Larger, endangered species in particular benefited from FSC conservation measures.
Effective measures against poaching
FSC-certified companies close old routes and finance anti-poaching patrols – important protective measures for endangered species such as elephants, leopards and gorillas.
A model for global responsibility
A quarter of tropical forests are under timber harvesting – FSC can set standards here. Consumers worldwide influence the condition of distant ecosystems through their purchasing decisions.
