How Betterwood protects the rainforest

Europe’s dependence on global supply chains became painfully clear in times of crisis. There is often a lack of transparency, especially when it comes to raw materials such as tropical timber from countries like China or India. However, some companies are adopting a different strategy – such as Betterwood, which specializes in sustainable tropical timber.

Tropical wood with a clear conscience

Catherine Körting is an entrepreneur and environmentalist. With her company Betterwood, she only imports sustainable tropical timber to Germany. Through careful selection and transparent supply chains, Betterwood ensures that its tropical timber protects the rainforest instead of endangering it.

From the tree to the terrace – 100% traceable

In close cooperation with the Peruvian partner company Maderakre, every tree that is felled for sustainable tropical timber is precisely documented and registered. Only healthy trees that do not disturb the ecosystem are felled. Every step in the supply chain, from felling to processing, is fully traceable, which ensures greater transparency.

Transparency in the supply chain

Betterwood ensures that every piece of tropical wood that the company imports can prove its origin and its entire journey from felling to resale. The independent FSC audit ensures that only sustainable tropical timber is used. This enables trusting cooperation between all parties involved.

Cooperation with indigenous communities

A large proportion of the sustainable tropical timber comes from the indigenous Gine community, who manage the forest in a traditional and sustainable way. Through the partnership with Maderakre and Betterwood, the Gine not only benefit financially, but also receive support in the areas of health and education.

Sustainable production in Germany

In Germany, the sustainable tropical wood is processed in a family business near Cologne. Tropical wood is naturally highly resistant, making it an excellent, long-lasting alternative to domestic woods, which often have to be chemically treated.

A contribution to rainforest protection

Catherine Körting is convinced that sustainable tropical timber can preserve the rainforest instead of destroying it. Her aim is to raise awareness and show how sustainable forestry and fair trade can help protect the rainforest and preserve biodiversity.
