Sustainable teak from reforestation

Teak is considered the king wood of the tropics. Its unique properties make it a sought-after material for garden furniture, wooden decking and furniture. However, the high demand has led to the teak tree becoming rare in primary forests. The use of teak from primary forests is therefore very problematic from an ecological point of view.

SUPPLY REFORESTATION

However, there is a way to enjoy the benefits of precious wood and still contribute to rainforest conservation. Sustainable reforestation projects and mixed forests with teak trees can meet the demand and protect the remaining teak trees in the primary forest.

These teak plantations already exist in Latin America, Africa and Asia. However, the quality of teak wood can vary greatly. The age of the tree is the main factor determining the quality of the wood. In Indonesia there are old plantations that were already established by the Dutch colonial power and provide significantly higher quality wood than is available in Central and South America, for example.

PLANTATIONS ARE NOT ALWAYS ECO

Also with regard to biodiversity and ecological benefits the plantations can differ. The absence of insecticides, the establishment of large eco-strips that are exempt from cultivation and the most diverse mixed forest planting possible have a positive effect and provide a habitat for numerous animal and plant species. In addition, plantations should not displace existing primeval forests, but should be established on areas used for industrial agriculture wherever possible.
